The Food Train
Food Train aims to help older people to eat well, live well and age well independently in their own homes for as long as they wish and are able.
The charity is based in Scotland and provides five services which include home support, shopping delivery, a befriending service and neighbourhood meal sharing. Services are delivered locally by teams of volunteers supported by a small staff team, reaching almost 3000 older people.
Anne, a lady in her 60s who lives alone, uses the Meal Makers service run by Food Train. Anne was referred to the charity in December 2015 and she was matched with her cook Andrew shortly afterwards. Andrew visits Anne on a weekly basis, bringing her a portion of home cooked food.
Anne reports this makes a big difference to her:
‘I have health problems and am unable to go out or cook for myself. [Andrew] is a lovely chap, he just talks away to me…his food is gorgeous, he makes whatever I fancy. I’m underweight and his good home cooking encourages me to eat. Meal Makers have given me some company, and helped me to eat more - two good things’.
